By car via OU-201 / OU-204: approximately 72 km (1 h 15 min). Final stretch OU-204 has tight curves and slopes; caution with large vehicles is recommended.

From the Bus Station

Regular line bus from Ourense to Parada de Sil (approx. 2 services daily on weekdays). From the village square, 2.4 km asphalted dirt track to the viewpoint, accessible walking in 35 min or by local taxi.

Geological Formation of the Sil Canyon

The promontory where the viewpoint stands is part of the granitic batholith of Central Galicia, formed during the Variscan orogenic cycle (Upper Paleozoic, approximately 300 million years ago). The fluvial incision of the Sil River, accelerated during the Pleistocene by base-level changes, has excavated a canyon of up to 450 meters of vertical drop at its maximum point, generating the stepped fluvial terraces that medieval monks took advantage of to implant terraced vineyards (socalcos) — the differential characteristic of the Ribeira Sacra wine-growing cultural landscape.

Roman Period: Roads & Forest Exploitation

During the Roman occupation of Gallaecia (1st century B.C. – 5th century A.D.), the upper Sil basin was an area of timber extraction (mainly oak and chestnut) destined for Atlantic coast shipyards, and also of small-format gold mining in the fluvial alluvia. Geographers such as Paulus Orosius (born in Braga, 5th century) cite the Sil as flumen clarissimus within the administrative division of the Conventus Bracaraugustanus. The road linking the pre-Roman castros of the area with the core of Iria Flavia (Padrón) passed through the very col where the viewpoint car park is located today.

Middle Ages: Monasteries, Vineyards and the «Sacred Shore»

Between the 9th and 15th centuries, the comarca was colonized by monastic orders (Benedictines, Cistercians, Hieronymites) who founded the famous monasteries of San Pedro de Rocas, Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil and San Esteban de Ribas de Sil. The monks were the first to terrace the Sil slopes to build socalcos and plant vines, creating the protected cultural landscape that today constitutes the Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin. Oral tradition attributes to a Cistercian prior of the monastery of Santo Estevo the discovery of the viewpoint as a place of contemplation during his Lenten retreats.

Oral Culture & Local Legends

The oral tradition of Parada de Sil preserves two stories closely linked to the viewpoint. The first recounts the story of a shepherdess who, while watching over her sheep on the promontory, saw a lady dressed in white appear over the riverbed; the lady gave her a bunch of herbs that cured her sick brother, which is why the population built a small hermitage (now disappeared) dedicated to Nosa Señora do Viso. The second, of a more pagan character, places a mouros (mythological figure of Galician folklore, corresponding to subterranean inhabitants) who lives in the granite crevices and comes out at sunset to «guard» the silence of the canyon, for which reason historically it was discouraged to remain at the viewpoint after sunset.

Ecology, Habitat & Conservation

The viewpoint surroundings are part of the SCI (Site of Community Importance) ES1120005 «Canyons of Sil and Cúa rivers» and form part of the Natura 2000 Network. The presence of breeding pairs of Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) and Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), listed as species of Community interest, is particularly noteworthy. Vegetation is dominated by the strawberry tree (origin of the toponym), cork oak, common oak and heather. As it is a sensitive ecosystem, strict compliance with LNT (Leave No Trace) principles is strongly recommended: do not abandon waste, do not leave marked trails and do not disturb fauna during breeding seasons (March – July).

20th – 21st Century: Declaration & Sustainable Tourism

The viewpoint was officially signposted by the Town Council of Parada de Sil in 1987, within the first Tourist Dynamization Plan of the Interior Ribeira Sacra. In 2003, the Xunta de Galicia included Balcóns de Madrid within the Official Network of Viewpoints of Galicia; and in 2014 it was incorporated into the European Route of Cultural Landscapes of the Council of Europe. Since 2022, the Concello (Town Council) of Parada de Sil, in coordination with the Parish Neighborhood Association, has applied a sustainable management protocol that limits the number of large vehicles in the accesses during weekends of July and August, ensuring the conservation of the granite substrate and the tranquility of the ecosystem.

Unpaved parking area with capacity for approximately 35 light vehicles. Free. Special PRM (disabled) bays (2 spaces) in high season. On sunny weekends of July, August and Holy Week the car park usually fills up before 11:30 a.m.; in that case, the Concello activates a waiting area at the OU-204 junction with an alternative detour. Parking is prohibited on the shoulders of the access road (risk of accident and fine according to Municipal Ordinance). Vehicles over 7 m: notify in advance.
